Applejack x Margan Wines
Applejack Hospitality X Margan Wines
We chatted with Ollie Margan from Margan Wines about the winery and our exclusive collaboration.
Margan Wines was established by Andrew and Lisa Margan in 1996 in the picturesque village of Broke, Hunter Valley which is Australia’s oldest wine region. We chat with their son Ollie who is a second generation viticulturist and winemaker about the award winning winery and their collaboration with Applejack.
How did you get started in wine?
My parents Lisa and Andrew Margan established the estate, complete with winery, in 1996. Whilst my contributions were limited then (age 4), I have worked in the business in an evolving capacity since day one. I formalised my relationship with the industry when I finished high school, where I completed three consecutive harvests around the world and commenced a Bachelor of Viticulture of Oenology and Viticulture at Adelaide University.
Tell us a bit about the history of the vineyard.
The estate boasts 70 hectares of vines and the vineyards are largely on the lauded Fordwich Sill, a geological formation dating back 200 million years.
How did the collaboration with Applejack come to be?
The Applejack x Margan relationship began several years ago on a trade junket in Bali. Since then, Applejack’s Group Sommelier Amandine Rouviere spent a day with us during harvest and the conversation took off from there.
Could you tell us about the 'Otis' Shiraz?
The Shiraz is off a 50-year-old vineyard on the Fordwich Sill. Fermented in small fermenters with wild yeast, this wine shows bright, fresh red fruits layered over savoury spice, which is typical of a Hunter Valley Shiraz from an elegant vintage.
We offer this incredible Shiraz on all our wine lists.
